Understanding foster care
Personal involvement is the best way to understand foster care on a deeper level. Here are some simple ways to get involved with foster families near you.
- Prayer. We can spiritually connect to foster families and their children through prayer. Many states allow a “Heart Gallery,” displaying individual photos of children in the foster system. Pray for these children to find homes.
- Respite Care. Every parent needs some time away. Through respite care, family and friends can become directly involved in a foster child’s life. You may find that you are qualified to do foster care yourself, as you spend brief times with a foster child.
- Church-based foster ministries. As Christian families become more involved in foster care, specialized church-based support is important for caregivers and children. For more information about how to start a foster care ministry in your church, see our resources page.
